So I posted this a few weeks back after learning about true caloric intake needs:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/931670-bmr-and-tdee-explained-for-those-needing-a-guide
And here is an update I put up a week ago in case people were wondering if this works and are afraid to eat more:
So less then 3 weeks ago I put this post up after thoroughly understanding TDEE and BMR. I decided to increase my calories to 1680 based on my #'s with a 20% loss from TDEE.
The first week, I lost the slight 3 lb gain I had when I was eating at a deficit - despite eating below 1200 when I was "unschooled" my body kept and retained even the plant based food - it was hungry! But after that bump to 1680, I lost those 3 lbs PLUS another 1 lb at that weigh in.
And today, down another pound making the loss since this increased calorie adjustment 5 lbs in less then 3 weeks!
The logic holds, it just makes sense and I was so afraid to eat - yesterday my cold was kicking my butt and I had to force in food and felt awful at only getting less then 1400 and said today I HAD to eat b/c no way would I stall my body again - this works and so much less hungry! Everyone, adjust, eat and lose!

Thank you for this. I just figured out my TDEE today. I am fearful that I will gain before I lose going from 1200 to 1600 but hopeful I will be able to benefit quickly like you have.0

I was one of those people that did gain... BUT
It took me a few months to adjust and that's because I severely screwed up my metabolism for the past two years. I started at 245 in 2010 and I severely restricted my calories and did vigorous exercise for 2 + years. Last summer...I stalled BIG TIME @ 192. Haven't budged at all...I trained for a half marathon and maybe lost 3 lbs at most. Nothing worked!!!! I was so used to eating so little that even when I gave up I didn't have to try and the scale kept going up... A LOT! In January of this year, I started at 206 lbs. Tried the low cal thing again and had some success (5lbs...but then stuck AGAIN!!!) Then I read about the road map and decided to give it a try.
So beginning February on the road map...I gained weight!!! I was so upset. then I decided to stick with it...As of middle of March I'm finally proud to say that I'm loosing inches! Just this past weekend I dared to weigh myself and I've finally lost another couple of pounds.
I'm eating at moderately active TDEE - 20% (1944 cals a day) and I've started lifting heavy weights in addition to my cardio.
So for those that do end up gaining weight at first...have patience. It's frustating, I know...but stick with it. It takes time for your body to eventually come to terms that you are not starving it and decides let go of the extra calories you put in.0 -
daelu773 Thank you for your personal update. I Have been doing the same darn thing with the same darn 20+ lbs for two years. So I am sure the scale will not like me but I am going to measure tonight and not measure or weigh for at least two weeks. I know myself and if the scale goes up I know it will bug the cra* outta me. Even though I am expecting it.0
