Heart rate monitor

I just completed a P90X 50 minute kickboxing (first time of doing P90X). He kept talking about checking our heart rates with a monitor. How important are these to getting results?

Does anyone have one they would recommend or not recommend? And does anyone know where I can go to learn what my target heart rate should be?
