Running Partners!

I have a neighbor that likes to run with her dog. I would love to have someone to run with like that. Unfortunately, my dog is 10 years old and I think it would be mean to make him start running at a more advanced age.

My cat however, is only 3 and he's pretty active and spry. I'm thinking about getting him started. I think he would like to spend time outside and it would be good exercise for him. I would keep him on a harness and leash of course. And, we would start with a couch-to-5K program, so he wouldn't be at risk for getting an injury.

Does anyone have an experience in running with their cats? Do you think I need to start him on a treadmill before hitting the pavement? Are there good specific cross training exercises for cats who run?

I'm not sure about running yet, but try to slowly break them in on the leash. Give them something that sparks their interest so that they actually want to be on the leash.

Mine like to peruse the fish department at the pet store, see:

My dog is 13 and he still runs. I like the cat leash idea, I already have the leashes, now I need a cat harness.

Does anyone have a harness they recommend? I just looked on Amazon and there are like a gazillion choices. This is confusing!

You need this. It keeps the cat safe in the car and is much more humane than a box. Then, when you reach the park for your run it can be used as a leash.

My cat looks even happier than this one when I use it.
