Do Saunas and/or Steamrooms help remove toxins?

Do they? Or is this just a myth? Ive heard they do and they don't. I suffer from moderate acne, so I was thinking, along with my paleo diet and exercising, that after my sweat sessions, I will ise the sauna or steamroom. Any feedback on this?

  • Unfortunately they don't do much in the way of removing toxins. The only "detoxification" you'll do in a sauna is that your sweat will push any dirt or debris out of your pores that has settled there. The plus side of this in your situation, though, is that the act of sweating could help push out some of the stuff in your pores that's causing your acne.

To receive the most benefit out of your sauna or steam room bath you should wash the area of skin that has acne after your session, and possibly before as well.

Though they don't do much in the way of "detox", sauna and steam room use is good for your circulatory and respiratory systems. They can help with skin problems, congestion, stress and of course help with rest and relaxation.

It's important to note, however, that these benefits only apply to a traditional Scandinavian style sauna, and not the newer "infrared saunas" that seem so trendy now. These infrared enclosures haven't been time tested the way a Scandinavian style sauna has, which have been used in a multitude of cultures for centuries with positive effects. We've heard people compare infrared "saunas" to sitting in a closet with a space heater. Warm and cozy, sure, but holding no where near the therapeutic benefits of a real sauna and having no where near the same expected environment.
