Starting Jog--Foot Clicking

I've just started to add jogging into my workouts. I alternate jogging with walking as I'm not in the greatest shape due to falling off the workout wagon (read my profile if you like ).
Anyways, yesterday I was jogging and the outside of my right foot started clicking/cracking. Annoying and somewhat painful--it continued the entire workout once it started whether I was walking or jogging. I'm wondering if its my shoes, gait (that what it's I think?) or my foot itself. It has happened before when I was working on a regular basis and tried jogging or running, but I really hated jogging/running so I went with a different cardio activity and didn't give it much thought.
I was on a asphalt paved track with my dog (not pulling, and nothing else in my hands). I also live in a rural area and can't just go and get fitted for shoes (feel free to find me on the map:wink: ) I'm hoping maybe an experienced runner may have some helpful insight to share.

Thanks:smile:
