I hope I spelled that right. I will be getting the chance to taste it. For those who eat it or have tried it... is it good? What is it made up of?

I HATE it! It's incredibly strong. I think it's a yeast product.0

I'd rather lick a kangaroos *kitten*
Don't do it0 -
Do you like eating stock cubes? That's pretty much what it tastes like. Vegemite is made from yeast.0

Vegemite and Marmite are both popular yeast products in my homeland of Australia. The low calorie brown paste is supposed to be used SPARINGLY. That means 'one little dab' of this stuff will give you tons of flavor. I love to put a drop of Marmite on a piece of toasted and buttered bread. It gives the bread a 'meaty flavor', like eating a grilled steak sandwich. I will admit that it may be an acquired taste. I grew up eating it at breakfast time.0

Big marmite fan, here. It's a product made out of left over yeast from brewing, so it's got a rather interesting and strong flavor. Great on buttered bread or as a spread in a sandwich with cheddar (or daiya fake cheddar) cheese. Also a great way for vegetarians to get B12...0 -
Try it just for the experience. My husband lived in Australia for a few years as a kid and insisted I try some. Not bad, definitely an acquired taste if you haven't grown up with it.0

Marmite is way to sweet. Vegemite all the way.0 -
NOM NOM NOM i love vegemite0

I've had Marmite every day, almost, all my life. My children all love it, and some of my grandchildren. If I am away from home, and cannot get it, I feel really deprived - and when we lived in US for two years, had to have friends bring it over specially!
You either love it or hate it - I posted a thread here about 9 months ago on the Team UK group asking if people loved or hated Marmite, and the Marmite lovers had a slight edge over the haters - but there was no in-between.
It is very salty, but does have some useful vitamins in it. Supposedly it started as the residue left in the bottom of the barrels after beer had been brewed.0 -

Our friend is coming from Australia and bringing some... I think he did say Marmite but not sure. I will try it so, we will see....0 -
I love Marmite, don't think I've tried vegemite. It's my main source of Iron (and some B-vitamins).
Marmite: brewer's yeast extract.
Vegemite: brewer's yeast extract/baker's yeast extract (depending on if halal or not).
Bovril: beef extract/chicken extract/baker's yeast extract (depending on flavour/country/halal/vegetarian version).0 -
I love Vegemite, but my favorite is Promite. nom noms0

Love Vegemite but yes you need to spread it VERY VERY thinly especially if you weren't brought up on it. Try it with a tasty cheddar cheese, that's the best!0
-
Can't stand vegemite but my husband loooves it. If you give him the opportunity he'd eat it everyday on his toast!0
-
Uh, it's possibly one of the best things ever! Toast with butter and vegemite (note, just a little bit!) is delicious and one of my favourite things to eat. But then, I am an Aussie and I grew up on this stuff!0
-
i prefer vegemite to marmite....i grew up in nz and every kiwi kid ate this stuff....my friends liked it sparingly on bread with a few potato chips (plain salted)....squish the bread to crunch the chips down a little and away ya go!!!! i never liked the vegemite and chip sandwich but i love it with some sliced cheese on top and grilled in the oven or with sliced tomatos and crispy bacon.....sighhh....brings back fond memories....:).....my husband (canadian) however, calls it "poop in a jar".....but then, he eats cheez whiz, so there's no accounting for taste....LOL....enjoy!!!!0

Tried it when I was backpacking in Australia and found it to be the most disgusting thing I had ever tasted. Vegemite to them is what peanut butter is to Canadians and Americans. You pretty much have to be raised on it from infancy to aquire the taste. Can't hurt to try... never know you might actually like it. Let us know.0

HORRID!0

Its an acquired taste. Go easy with it if you haven't tried it before..
Its a spread that goes best on buttered toast. Apply very thinly. See if you like it and gradually add more.
It contains a *kitten*-load of B-group vitamins. Originally it was a bi-product of the beer brewing process and is made from yeast but these days its made in its own factory.
I hope you enjoy.

You north americans are soooooo soft!!
(I'm only joking).
I do feel greatly for anyone who hasn't grown up with vegemite and has a rude awakening as introduction to the product. Its a little like wasabe in the sense that a little goes a long loooooooooooooong way.
kind regards,

I love it, but I agree with the above posters that most people who like it were raised enjoying it as children. Still, maybe you'll like it even as an adult.0
-
I just had Vegemite on an english muffin for lunch. I absolutely love it! Don't put much on though, otherwise it's too strong0
-
You little ripper! Love the stuff.
I'm a born and bred aussie....but yes... spread it thinly - there is nothing better for breakie than vegemite on toast with a cuppa!!
:laugh:0 -
I have it every day! It think it's down to the quantity that you have - anyone who eats it from a spoon is crazy!!! And even among Aussie's that love it (like me) there is a fine balance of what people like, a bare scraping on toast, a more liberal smear, or lathered on.
I am in between and would use about a teaspoon on one piece of toast... with a fried egg on the top for good measure!
Love the salt flavour0 -
It's got that special 'umami' taste, love it. Toast with butter and vegemite is especially good when you're sick/hungover.
I also have it on toast with cottage cheese - kinda weird but good.0 -
I love it! But yes, use SPARINGLY! Either do it on toast with a fair bit of margarine or have it with some cheese to tone it down (mmm...toasted cheese and vegemite sandwich!)0

We're happy little Vegemites
As bright as bright can be.
We all enjoy our Vegemite
For breakfast, lunch and tea.
Our Mummies say we're growing stronger every single week
Because we love our Vegemite.
We all adore our Vegemite.
IT PUTS A ROSE IN EVERY CHEEK!
We're growing stronger every week.
That is why I have rosy cheeks
Definitely an acquired taste. My Dad is American, he still does not know how to put it on a sandwich or toast. As kids we hated him making us vegemite sandwiches or toast because he would SLATHER it on - that's no how you do it! It's awesome on toast, crumpets, saladas or fresh bread. YUM0 -
In my humble Aussie opinion, vegemite is one of the greatest things to be invented. Totally awesome. Just seeing this thread made me want to get some Vita Weets, spread some butter and vegemite on them, squeeze them together and make worms. A true Aussie tradition. Takes me right back to childhood. And possibly when I did it last week.
Yes, also with cheese, awesome.0
