Is it true females automatically weigh more at the time of the month or is this just something we tell ourselves to feel better lol?

There's a reason they call it "water weight." So yes, you do gain.0

I gain up to five pounds of water weight during that time. It is a very dramatic change on the scale. One of my colleagues bloats up by three pounds during TOM.
It varies from woman to woman, but one can retain a lot of water.0 -
I don't weigh any more at time of the month.0

I can only answer from personal experience, but I go up 3-4 pounds a day or two before. Those pounds drop back off after - retaining water I am sure.0

I've gone up about 8-9lbs before.0

From my own experience, I'd say yes. Most recently, according to the scales I was 4 pounds heavier on the first couple of days of my period.0
