Thoughts on prepackaged protein shakes?

I am just beginning to lift and I always struggle to get enough protein. They sell a canned protein shake at the gym I joined that has 50g........yes/no......doesn't matter?

These aren't bad. The vanilla ones are kind of gross. Pure Protein ones aren't too bad either. It would be cheaper for you to buy a tub of protein powder and make your own, though.
  • Protein shakes are good but you should be careful of what you buy. I would stick to something all-natural (because you never know what garbage is really in something) and you don't want extra unnecessary ingredients. If you buy in bulk (like a big bottle rather than individual ones from the gym, which are probably overpriced) you can save some money.

Most brands I have are 100-140 calories per serving (1 scoop) and have between 20-30 grams of protein. You can always have two scoops if you want. Another alternative (I know you didn't really ask) is greek yogurt. Fage Total has 23 grams per serving for only 130 calories and I mix in some cocoa powder and sweetener to make it kind of like chocolate pudding (but healthy!)

I also like to make my own shake at home for post-workout. I take a banana, either a scoop of protein powder (vanilla flavor), and frozen strawberries and ice and water and it makes a delicious strawberry banana protein shake with lots of healthy goods in there! Another one would be banana/chocolate protein powder/ice/water/extra cocoa powder.

    Hope I could help!

If you peel and freeze your bananas, you get a nice milk shake quality to your protein shake too. I'm using either Tera'swhey grass-fed organic protein or Protein 17 and blending it in a Vitamix with a frozen banana, a Tbsp of raw, organic cacoa powder, and a cup of coconut milk. It makes a pretty gorgeous chocolate shake, with not much fat and a heap o' protein and other nutrients.

If you peel and freeze your bananas, store 'em in a zip lock freezer bag for later use in smoothies/shakes, you can buy the red taped, on sale and about to go bad bananas and save a lot of money on them. :)
