    What is HIIT?

HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training.

The idea is to alternate periods of short, intense anaerobic exercise (ie: all-out 95-100% effort sprints) with less-intense recovery periods.

The interval of intense exercise to recovery period is usually a 2:1 ratio, but some people need to start with 1:1 or even 1:2 and build fitness accordingly.

IE: A beginner may start with a 3 minute warmup, followed by 5 sessions of 20 seconds of max-speed sprint alternated with 40 seconds of moderate-pace walking, followed by slow, easy cool-down period.

A more-conditioned athlete may start with the same 3 minute warmup, but do 10 sessions of 40 second max-speed sprints on an incline alternated with 20 seconds of moderate-pace walking, followed by the same slow, easy cool-down period.

In addition to treadmill sprints you can do HIIT on a bike or elliptical by alternating both speed and resistance ... There's quite a variety of ways you can engage in the activity.

    The benefits of HIIT:

    * It's the best cardiovascular exercise for not-only maintaining, but building lean muscle mass.
    * It will burn more calories in the same time as steady-state cardio (depending upon fitness level)
    * It burns more calories AFTER you stop than steady-state cardio (raises your metabolic rate for longer duration)

... and some people don't care about this, but it also utilizes more circulating glucose and improves insulin-sensitivity better than steady-state cardio, so it's overall much better for anyone suffering from diabetes or metabolic syndrome so commonly seen in obese individuals.
