HRM vs Machine data

Hello, I have a question that I hope someone might be able to answer for me.

I joined a gym today and already had a Polar heart rate monitor so I used that during my first workout. I have a question, my HRM said I burnt 500 calories whereas the bike I was on only said it was about 150 calories total. This is a huge discrepancy, although all throughout the workout my heart rate was consistently matching between the two, so I'm not confident that I actually burnt what my HRM said it did... I was on a bike, and rode for around 40 minutes around the recommended fat burning range.

500 calories seems a little high but it depends on your weight, age and the shape your in already. Also, if it was high intensity than 500 is okay. At the same time, 150 calories is way too low for that many minutes. If i do spin class for 55 minutes i burn 500 but i am in pretty good shape. I never go by the machines at the gym because they do not know your weight, height, etc.
