Very tired and depressed

I am not sure, if this post is suppose to be under this section.

Off late I feel very tired, lethargic, irritated, frustrated, depressed and hopeless during the second half of the day. I also feel my mind blocked and foggy. I just feel like running away from everything. I have hypothyroidism and I used to feel this sometime earlier when I used to not workout. I feel all energetic immediately after workout and have a sense of satisfaction. But as I come to work or as day progresses I just don't want to do anything. I just feel tired and exhausted. I am not taking any medications for thyroid problem. Also I feel like giving up and crave for all greasy foods. Sometimes, I do end up eating them.

Not sure how to over come this. Any suggestions?

Just a quick look at your diary shows you are not hitting your calorie goal. This could be why you are lacking in energy. Be sure to always try and hit your calorie target and when you are exercising eat back some of your exercises calories so you at least net your BMR.

Hello there. I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and basically, you need to take the medication. The pills are needed to bring your thyroxine level to where it should be for your body to function properly. I've been taking the medication for a couple of months now and feel so much better. My energy levels are back to normal, I get so much more out of my workouts and my mood is so much better.

I'd make an appointment with your doc and get the medication as soon as you can. Honestly, I'd be really surprised if it didn't help you.

    Good luck.

    xx

Well I looked back through your diary for a few days and my suggestion is eatting more protein.
  • Make sure you're getting a good balanced lunch - including protein and healthy fats - the lack of fats could be what is causing your lethargy - for me, its easier if I use a fatty fish (like salmon or tuna) because I really don't love putting olive oil or other oily dressings on my salads and rarely even use salad dressing, but nuts (almonds/almond butter) and oil can work, too.

The other recommendation that has really helped me is to eat protein and carbs for breakfast - either a really good protein powder mixed with almond milk and fruit or scrambled eggs with veggies and whole wheat toast or a wrap with a tortilla stuffed with egg whites, veggies, and cheese - very filling and again, balanced, so it gives your body what it needs to get through the first half of the day (work day, anyway) without major cravings - then if you get the lunch in, it should help.

When are you exercising? Maybe you're draining too much energy out early and not giving yourself enough calories to keep moving???

Now you are going to get lot of people saying to eat more with the thread you have posted...You know eating protein and healthy fat satisfies hunger and cravings, eating dark chocolate also gives energy and changes mood. For thyroid you need to check with Doctor and go for tests..Also you can increase your food intake and see how you feel...you have come a long way and this is not the time to give up...At your height, you are starving your body everybody will say...Eating around 1200 is not good I think...Up your calories to a few hundred more and see...
  • Have you had your thyroid levels tested recently? Maybe you need some thyroxine. So easy to get a blood test, then you'll either be able to rule thyroid issues out or get some meds to get you to the right level. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

The thyroid is critical in regulating metabolism and energy, and also is thought to be involved in mood and emotion.
My initial thought on this post is that it is thyroid related. Especially since the energy level and mood seem to be linked.

It's normal to feel a little frazzled after a long day at work, but if this has becomea regular pattern, and changing your routine doesn't seem to help, it may be time to try another route.

Has your doctor suggested a medication option for your thyroid?

When we are sick, we can't be at the top of our game. So, its better to get to the source of the problem, so you can get on with your life and have the energy to do what you want to.

Well thats a very common SIDE EFFECT (IF I may say so) of losing weight or going on a nutritious diet. Your body is in state of denial for the new found regime and your mind wants to revert to old ways. Also you may be on the lower side of calories hence these feelings. I have experienced these on my low cal days. Are you otherwise satisfied with your work and other things ?

You must take your meds for hypothyroidism. Everything u listed are symptoms of it left untreated. It should get better after.

Thanks everyone!! I try and eat atleast 1600 cals per day. But I have been eating at 1600 more than 40 days now. Just that I am not taking any thyroid medications. I tested myself on 8th Mar'13 and TSH value was 6.4, T4 also low. May be as all of you suggest, I will get tested in a day or two and get medications for thyroid. hope that will help :(.
