How to properly do a lunge or build towards it?

Hi MFP Friends

I've been working out a home via videos and also walking/jogging. I've been doing great and have lost 50 pounds already. However, now i'm trying to work on form and endurance during my workout. I have a hard time doing lunges. My ankles seem to roll and my front knee hurts a bit. The last thing I want to do is injury myself.

Any suggestions on other exercises I can do to improve strength or tips on how to do them right.. Should I do it slower/less reps?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

I've been doing Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. her advice around sore knees with lunges, is to not go as deep with the back knee, and make sure you don't lean forward with your body: your front knee should be at a 90 degree angle, and your back hamstring to your butt and up your back to your head should basically be a straight line. You can check out 30DS on youtube and watch the girl on the right to see the modified version. I'm slowly working up to a full lunge, and still seeing great gains.
