Does your body 'get used to it' if you eat the same foods?

I caught the tail end of a segment on one of those early evening talk shows where they said that, like your body gets used to it when you always do the same exercises, it also gets used to it when you always eat the same foods. I was just wondering if others thought this was true... is it essential to continually mix up the foods you eat in order to keep your body 'guessing'? If so, why is that the case - how does your body know? If it works in terms of carbs, fats, etc, as long as you have a mixture of grains, meat, fruits, veggies, etc, how could eating the same, or very similar meals, on a regular basis become a problem in terms of the way your body processes the food?

Variety in a diet is essential to proper nutrition. An apple a day isn't enough to provide all the nutrients you need :) . Your body may not necessarily be "getting used" to the foods as much as you would be missing out on key nutrients and not able to perform as well.
