I am fairly new to MFP so I'm sorry if someone has posted this question before...I am not sure yet how to search for older message board posts.

It seems like I have heard this before that immediately after a workout you can weigh up to a couple pounds more and was wondering what is the reasoning or science behind that?

Also, how long should one wait before weighing in AFTER a workout?

Thanks!

I consistently weigh one pound less. I'm sure due to water loss. Can't imagine why someone would weigh more. Good question!

I do. 1 lb generally from the water I drink pre-workout and while I'm working out, it's always gone within a few hours after :)

Be sure to weigh yourself at the same time each time you weigh in. Mine is Tuesday's at 530pm :)

if you drink water, you will weigh as much as that water, minus water loss from sweat.

Otherwise do you think that your body can just create mass from nothing?

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it (so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong! ), but it seems that, for me anyway, if I've had a really tough workout and I finish my entire bottle of water, I'll weigh a little more. So maybe it's just depends on the water?

When I do my "official" weigh-in, I always do it first thing in the morning before I eat or work out. When I weigh myself post-workout, it's just out of curiosity rather than using it as data to put into the MFP check-in.

Some people do weigh more because their muscles absorb more water because of glycogen and can hold onto that.

No I don't think we create mass from nothing...and now that you put it that way, maybe what I remember is to NOT measure after a workout because your muscles are bigger directly after a workout???
    Thanks for being so forthwright!

    Thanks everyone for your responses!
I do usually weigh myself at the same time every week in the morning before I eat and workout, but yesterday and today I am experiementing with weighing myself several times throughout the day so I can actually SEE how much weight can fluctuate in a day and I was surprised that after my workout I was almost 3 lbs heavier and I only had one sip of water before my workout and one sip of water after my workout, but maybe my scale wasn't calibrated because 1/2 hour later I was back to where I was before the workout.
