When To Set Goals?

When I first started MFP, I set my goal weight at 150 from 175 (lbs). I know, not too ambitious, but I figured that I could achieve some health benefits and not have to make too many drastic changes (I'm 47, not 27 after all). I figured once I hit 150, I could re-evaluate and go from there.

Well, I weighed in at 160 this morning and was on a website to calculate my bmi. This website was kinda up-front about how people perceive their optimum weight based on their current weight and age and what is medically sound. Anyway, based on some other things I read on the website, I thought that maybe I should drop my goal to 140.

Here's my question: should I go along with my current plan of waiting 'til I hit 150 before making that decision, or make the change now? I went into my settings and changed my goal weight and got subtracted 50 Calories. I'm kind of scared that I won't be able to do this...

I don't think there is a right or wrong way. I have chosen to set a first goal that is attainable and puts me solidly into healthy BMI territory and in the size clothes I would like to be in. I'm 3lbs away now. When I get there, I am planning to spend a little time in maintenance and then re-evaluate whether I'd like to continue trying to lose weight, or just maintain and focus more on body composition.
