What exactly is the difference between being "well hydrated" and "retaining water"? Are these terms essentially the same thing?

theoretically, if you're well hydrated, your body will retain less water because it is confident that you have reliable access to clean drinking water. water retention occurs when your body needs to hold on to water for some reason - for example, after lifting weights, your body clings to more water than ususal in order to help nourish the torn muscles and begin the repair process.0

Sugar and sodium cause you to hold more water. This water retention is what causes bloating and extra water weight. If you are well hydrated, you are holding excessive water in your body, and do not appear bloated. They are not the same thing.0
