New HRM help and Heart Rate

Ok so I bought a new HRM yesterday it's a New Balance slim HRM and Pedometer/watch. This is going to sound like such a dumb question but here it goes. If I run on a treadmill or walk the pedometer beeps for me to check my Heart Rate which is great and after I stop it it tells me calories burned...easy...I get that.

Now I want to do yoga or say 30 Day Shred...the pedometer is kind of useless in that regard so I would just rely on HR. The question is...when do I take the heart rate? During the workout or as soon as I finish like before cool down? Once I have my heart rate I can figure out calories burned.

And yes I know I should have bought a Polar Fit or something more expensive but I dont have a lot of funds and this will have to do for now.

Any help or advice?
