Calories question... again (sorry)

Just helping my husband work out what he should be eating calorie wise using all the TDEE stuff.

His details are as follows

Age 30
Height: 5ft11
Weight: 212
BF%: 27

I worked out his BMR is 2084 and TDEE 3095 (he has a desk job but goes to the gym 3x a week doing cario and resistance and also swimming once a week)

He wants to lose weight and his first goal is to get to 198lbs.

Does 2470 calories set as his goal sound about right, but making sure he does not net under 2084?

Thank you in advance, I don't want to give him any wrong advice,

i do mine like this... if his TDEE is 3095 for a day then a week full of calories is 21,665. 3095x7
is he wants to lose a pound a week -500 deficit. then that 500x7days =3500 calorie deficit
so subtract 21665-3500=18165 then devide by 7 days. = 2595 a day. (if his measuring etc and portion control is right. ) to lose more than a pound a week he would have to have more of a deficit.

I think what you have is fine. it gives him a little wiggle room if he isnt spot on with every detail but it should be fine for him. i always take the weeks average when i do mine... some days are just different.

Did you go to the scoobyworkshop website to do the calculations? It looks to be 20% below his TDEE. He might have to try it for a while & see how it goes - it all depends on how many calories he's used to consuming.

To be fair I went to several different sites and ran the numbers, I might have used the one you said, but cannot remember LOL.

At the moment he is trying to make healthier changes so instead of 2 bags of crisps at work, he is eating a banana instead. His problem is, he is very fussy. I has taken him ages to be able to just tolerate eating bananas.

When he first started eating them, he went out of the office and ate them in his car because he was so embarrassed that he heaved on them, but he is determined to learn to enjoy healthier foods and does make small changes which are working, he actually does eat a few veggies now.

The most confusing thing in the world LOL!!

Just kidding, I will wait for someone else to explain it as I am still trying to get my head around it.

BMR = calories just to exist & TDEE = calories for activity. If you go to scoobyworkshop & do your calculations (sex, height, age etc) you will get your BMR. This is your "don't go below number" for me it's around 1,450. After doing your BMR you will figure your TDEE ( type of work & exercise I.e. active job& work out 5 hrs a week) whatever category you fit into will be your TDEE. For me it's around 2,250. Depending on how much weight you want to lose you will subtract a % from this number. I think they give the options of 10%, 15% or 20%. So for me 20% would be 2,250 - 20% (450) = 1,800 calories per day to lose.

Wow. I'm just going to say right now, if he hates a food so much he heaves, he shouldn't be eating it. Help him find healthier foods he likes or prepare them in ways he finds appetizing. Eating food that makes him sick isn't the right way to be healthy. That's terrifying that he would do that, or that you'd encourage him to do that and think there's nothing wrong with him gagging on food as he forces it down.

That said, good for you both for trying for a healthier lifestyle. Just don't make yourselves miserable doing so.

I use http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/ it the military version. I did the body fat % for me then went to the calorie and BMR rate. That will figure it out too. If you want a more in depth search do a search in the community on MFP for IPOARM.

Thank you for the reply. With regards to my husband trying to "force" (for want of a better word) to like certain foods, that has been his choice. He like the smell and flavour of foods, but struggles with the texture. He annoys himself that he used to love how things smelt, but could not eat it. His Mum was not the greatest at getting him to eat fruit and veg when he was a child.

It all started when he worked at a Chinese, delivery food. He used to get a certain dish, then one day asked for the same dish without peppers, and he said it did not taste as nice, so the next time he had them add the peppers back in, gradually he started to eat them and now he really likes them.

He has been doing this with various things and now likes carrots, green been and broccoli. I think for him it is mind over matter. and he wants so badly to eat better.

I think the biggest thing for him, he is so embarrassed that our children LOVE fruit and veg and when we go out for a meal, he always gives our kids his side salad or certain veg, rather than leave it on his plate when our children literally clear their plates up.

His roast dinners used to be Meat, potatoes, stuffing balls, Yorkshire pudding and SUPER NOODLES! No veg in sight, now it is meat, few potatoes EITHER stuffing OR Yorkshire and loads of veg!
