Scared to up my calories.....

Hey guys,

So I've just read this post.....

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/931670-bmr-and-tdee-explained-for-those-needing-a-guide?hl=bmr

......and it sounds great and makes perfect sense! But now, and I'm sure I'm not the first person to feel this way, I'm panicking about upping my calories. Terrified even! Am I going to put back on everything I've lost before I start losing again?

When I manually change my calories to what is suggested when calculating my BMR and TDEE, MFP tells me that I will only lose 0.9lbs per week. That's not a figure to be sniffed at but ideally I want to be losing more than that each week at the moment as I have a fair bit to lose. I'm all for losing slowly and steadily but I don't want to slow down my weight loss by switching to upping my calories.

The reason I'm considering changing what I'm doing (MFP recommends 1200 cals a day to lose 2lbs per week), is because I've read a lot of posts about eating your BMR calories and how it is important to eat those as a minimum. My BMR is 1755. My TDEE works out at 2413 so less 20% would leave me eating 1930 a day, so quite different to what MFP suggests!!

So basically I'm completely confused as to what the best thing for me to do is to continue to lose between 1 and 2lbs per week. A lot of the reading about BMR I've read says that it can take anywhere up to 6 weeks for your body to adjust to the increased calories and I just do not want to start gaining weight!

My other issue is, if I do up my calories, what sort of foods would people recommend eating to make up the calories. I currently eat what I would consider three round meals a day, I don't deprive myself so how do I eat more without added fat. Fruit and veg wouldn't make up enough of those extra calories as they are so low in cals!

I know the answer to all of this is going to be......do what works for you......but am I doing the right thing for LONG-TERM results? I'd hate to continue what I'm doing now and then have my weight loss come to a complete halt.

Ideally I'd like to get feedback from people that have done what I am potentially going to do ie. upped their calories from the MFP minimum to calories consumed based on their BMR and TDEE.

Thanks in advance!!

x

Well i believe that method is a straight cut o 20%. That's not recommended for everyone, it's more based on your body fat %. The more fat you have the more you can lose.

So you're scared to increase your calories? Oh well, if you want results you got to do what you got to do.

Food choices? Anything that you want as long as it fits in to your calories.

I second everything he just said, and I think he has shown he can lose weight. I have lost a bit myself also.

Thank you for this :) I've downloaded the spreadsheet and am going to give this a go as of Monday and see what happens! x
