Making better use of the Gym

Hi all..

At present I am in terrible shape.

I’m currently 142kg, I started out at about 152 ish and haven’t done anything more than stop eating the obvious extra extra bits of crap I buy when at the shops or garage.

Attacking the food part of my supposed lifestyle change is going to be a nightmare and I’d rather not think/deal with that at the moment.

Exercise is one thing that I think I could do without too many emotional barriers. I have been “going” to the gym on occasion. Now is the time to get a bit more serious with it. I want to make the best of my time there as I don’t get to spend hours there.
Currently I have only been able to cope with the cross trainer. I do a 35 minute workout on it. The machine says that in that time I burn about 450 calories.

I have tried the tread mill, however it just simply hurts and I just have to stop within a couple of minutes. I have read a few threads on here that say that lifting is the key to weight loss. I am wondering what other things or exercises I might find helpful to make the most of it.

Try swimming or do the elliptical machine. Good luck...

I wouldn't rely on what the machine says, invest in a heart rate monitor. Swimming is good, the cross trainer your already doing and this will work! You could try walking on an incline on a treadmill rather than running? What about the exercise bike or the stair master/climber? Weights are good too you could ask a trainer at the gym to give you an initial programme of weights?
