Do you think I'm getting as much out of exercise if I break it up? I'm trying to get used to a new machine and having a hard time going more then 5mins at a time.

Can you elaborate a bit more?
What are your goals? What is your current fitness program? More specifically, what machine are you referring?0 -

Depending on the kind of exercise, I'd say breaking up an exercise is probably a waste of time, once you get your heart rate up you dont want to stop, cool down, warm up, exercise, cool down, warm up...etc etc.
Just keep pushing a little further each time.
The first time I did the elliptical I could only do about 10 minutes, within a month I was easily doing 45 minutes.0 -
I'm on an elliptical, a lower end one, it's called The Gazelle. Thanks for the replies and advice everyone, I will try to push myself a little farther each time. I am up to 20 minutes on my stationary bike, but the elliptical is really working my arms and I'm not used to it. I'm in pretty bad shape, so it's a little embarrassing that only 5 minutes on the new machine and I'm pooped!
ETA: Chris, I've got 88 more pounds to lose. I'm doing a low glycemic index diet (only eating foods that rate under 55) I've got the stationary bike and elliptical, and plan to start walking when the weather gets a little better. And also I have some work out dvds but have such a hard time keeping up, I've just felt more comfortable on the machines thus far.0 -

Okay definitely dont take breaks - once you get up to about 10 minute you'll realize the worst really is the first couple of minutes and that goes for any exercise and it doesn't matter how long you've been exercising, the first 5 minutes is ALWAYS the worst. Go slow and steady. Aim to burn about 100 calories in 10 minutes. then bump up to 15 minutes - 150 calories, then 20 minutes etc.0
