Okay I am going grocery shopping tomorrow and I have tasted greek yogurt when it first came out at the store as a sample and it was horrible. Tasted like sour cream gone bad. What am I missing? Is there a certain flavor I should try and work myself into getting used to the taste because I have and prefer a serving of dairy with breakfast and lunch so adding more options is always a plus. (the sample had some kind of fruit stuff on it but it didnt help so adding fruit may not work)

I add stevia to sweeten it up. I am on South Beach so I can't have a lot of fruit though I imagine most berries would be good. I have mixed in lemon extract (not my favorite), Hershey's cocoa powder, or cinnamon. My SIL suggested slivered almonds which I havent tried but imagine would be delish! I eat the plain fat free variety which is all I can have on SB.

If you're not used to unsweetened yogurt it takes a while to adjust to the flavour. I rarely eat it plain though, it's best when you add some cut up fruit or nuts to it or use it as you would sour cream in more savoury dishes.

I love the chiobani brand. I usually add 3 diced strawberries and a stevia packet to liven up the sweetness, but I have come to the conclusion in this new lifestyle I am working towards that sometimes I just have to eat things for the nourishment of my body. I tell my kids this to when it comes to eating fruits & veggies they don't like. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and scarf it down for your own benefit! lol! You can buy the ones that already have fruit in them, but they usually have more calories, higher carb/sugar content and less protein. Also great for substituting for mayo, dips, sour cream, smoothies, etc....the uses are really limitless to your creativity!

What if you mixed the two with a little maple syrup?

I eat the Chobani non fat plain Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries or apples. The sweetness from the fruit is good enough for me.

My new favorite is the Liberte Greek- Lemon.

I pretty much stick with Fage, tho light and fit makes some good flavors.

My absolute favorite is the Chobani Pineapple flavor. I really only eat that and the apple/cinnamon flavors. Can't stand any others.

I really like the Fage brand. Maybe try the 2% - it's got a nicer flavor and texture. I always put some sweetener in my plain yogurt, like maple syrup or agave nectar, because it's quite tart! Also I usually eat it with fruit and homemade granola.

If you truly don't like it, you don't have to eat it!

I've tried just about every one in the grocery store, but just couldn't like any of them till I found Dannon Light & Fit Greek. I like the vanilla (haven't tried the other flavors). It doesn't have that chalky aftertaste that some Greek yogurts have and all the macros are pretty comparable to the others.

I'm a huge fan of the greek yogurt, perhaps reading the ingredients will help convince you. Be sure to check on the low fat ones, most have artificial sweetener in them (that is a whole other topic). sometime it just says contains aspertaime (same thing). Greek yogurt usually will ONLY have milk, geletin or pectin, and live cultures. That is ALL that is needed to make yogurt! I saw someone mention cocoa powder and that is awesome especially if you wanted to freeze it you can almost fool yourself into thinking its icecream. Honey and real fruit sweeten it up as well. I can't say enough good things about it, I use it in place of sour cream all the time and like it plain. I think sometimes with food its an adjustment thing.
If you cut out excess sugars an salty food your taste buds actually change. If you go back after awhile things will taste overly sweet or salty.

    This.

I've cut down on sugar and the other morning, I almost cried at how amazingly sweet some mango and pineapple tasted.

To be honest, I think the fattier version is a lot nicer.
  • I use the Chobani yogurts - I like most of the flavors and I add a quarter cup of a crunchy cereal topping - my favorite to add is Post Selects Cranberry!!!

Chobani and Fage are the brands you want to get that are usually the most commercially available. Personally I like the full fat plain Fage (it's like eating cool whip... except that it's good for you! ha)
Just about any flavor you get of Chobani is good too.

I'm with you. I can't stand the flavor! I have had the plain in a recipe and it was pretty good, but to just have the plain greek yogurt (or even the one with honey) YUCK!! The flavored ones are tasty though, in my opinion. Another opinion of mine - it's a bandwagon thing. It's something new and people go on and on about the protein content so everyone goes nuts over it. To me, it's no better than regular yogurt and it's more expensive. There's a Kroger brand Carb Smart that you can have 2 cups for more protein and fewer calories than 1 cup of greek. And it'd still be cheaper. And there are more flavor options.

Dannon Oikos Vanilla flavored greek yogurt (120 calories)... add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of mixed fruit (blueberries, strawberries, mango, etc). Optional toppings: 1 tsp of honey, tbsp granola. Great and easy breakfast!
  • Funny that I am reading this now....eating Chobani right now! I really don't like Greek yogurt either, but they have 100 calorie packs and one of them is Carmel flavored with pineapple chucks. Its awesome! The sour after-taste is almost gone :)

Do you like sour cream? it's sour because it has 'gone bad', or rather it has fermented in a particular way. Yogurt has fermented in a different way, so, yes it's going to be different, usually tarter, but not bad. If it was plain yogurt, I'd try adding a sweetener and fruit.

I only really like Chobani - 0% or 2% in almost every flavor - but can tolerate a few other brands.

My husband only like blended strawberry Oikos. Not fruit on the bottom, no other flavor, no other brand.

I have a co worker that has tried every brand in tons of flavors. She just doesn't like it.

Plain greek yogurt taste just like sour cream to us so we use it all the time on tacos and potatoes. I tried a thousand ways to make it sweet with honey, fruit, mix ins.... I just don't care for it that way

I would say buy one or two in a flavor you like. give it a try. next week try two different brands or flavors.

Trial and error is the only way we found what we liked.

    Good luck

I'd like to try some real (full fat) greek yogurt. It's impossible to find anything but low fat/fat free in my area. I've tried the low fat stuff and it tastes chalky to me.

I love the Smari yogurts. Any flavor. It's not "greek" yogurt because it's Icelandic, but it's made the same way as greek and tastes better. I can only find it at Whole Foods here in Atlanta.

After eating greek yogurt for so long, I don't like the regular anymore. I just tried the Chobani nonfat plain with strawberries and I had to add stevia.

Non-fat is disgusting. Buy whole-fat Fage instead. Seriously, its only 40 calories more than the 2% variety but tastes so much better.

I love the Dannon Oikos Vanilla - has a slightly different flavor than the other Greek yogurts.

Also, the Fage with the honey is delicious (the honey helps mask the flavor) - not sure on the calorie count on the Fage though.
