Truffle Butter/Oil

2 Questions:

Is it really super delicious? I've heard great things about truffles, but of course they're insanely expensive. But I've heard about truffle butter/oil and I'm curious about trying it. What's the taste like?

Where can you buy it for a reasonable price (if that's possible!)?

I like it - when used sparingly. It has a strong, "earthy" flavor. I have found it in some of our regular grocery stores (Publix and Sweetbay) - a small bottle for about $10 (they don't actually use truffles in it, it's synthetic flavorings). Since you only use a little at a time, this bottle will last you a while. My husband sometimes puts it in hamburgers and on steaks. We've tried the black and white truffle oils - the black is more robust, the white more mellow. I've heard that the black truffle butter and truffle salt is better. Look at your local specialty grocer or online..

I've never tried it, but there's a TV Show (USA) called "Chopped," where chefs compete to make the best food from the same ingredients. Whenever the chefs use truffle oil, the judges act like it's the biggest mistake ever. Like it's something that uneducated chefs *THINK* is haute cuisine, but ruins the dish...lol.

Here's an excerpt from a website that listed the #1 way NOT to get eliminated on "Chopped"...
•DON'T USE TRUFFLE OIL! It's a trap, it's only there to separate the flaming chumps from the chefs who are not on fire. Every single time a contestant grabs the truffle oil off the shelf, the judges release a collective groan. They hate it. Aaron Sanchez once said it's a product that should be incinerated.

But I say if you like something, then who cares what anyone else thinks. ;-)
