How does muscle help burn fat? Or, why do people with more muscle have a higher (or perhaps more efficient) metabolism?

For example, when a person has more muslce than another person, what happens in the body physically and chemically that would make the person with more muscle burn more fat?

I just don't understand the science.

Someone please try explain because this has always bothered me :)

Thank you MFP in advance :)

Fuelling all that extra muscle requires energy. Unlike fat that just sits there, waiting to be needed.

That's the way I understand it, anyhow.

Muscle has a larger calorie requirement. It doesn't technically help you burn fat faster. Regardless if you eat 1500 calories or 3000 calories, if your calorie deficit is 500 calories a day, you will lose 1 lb per day. But those who have more muscle burn more calories, which means they can eat more calories and in reality, their body needs more calories to maintain their lean body mass. Below is a good article that should help.
