Ew. I'm glad to be in California. Give me an earthquake over a swarm of bugs.0

I've been experiencing a swarm. Ever since I lost all this weight and my confidence is up, all these womenz have been friend requesting me left and right.

Last year we had crazy amounts of inch worms, they covered everything!!! Disgusting!0

There are different types, there is a type on a 13-year cycle and some on an annual cycle. They can predict it because it happened here 17 years ago and they know the breeding patterns, I suppose.
Unfortunately, it is real. If anyone was up here back in '96 they might remember it, these are from the same brood...will be interested in seeing those stories.
A cicada is a very noisy flying bug, cousin to the cricket. The live underground near the root systems of trees.
They can be a menace to fragile or young trees, so you may want to wrap them in foil...:)
argh! I am n PA and I remember as a kid in '96 those stupid things when I would play outside and the crunch walking all over the bodies.0 -
In 96 I was visiting northeastern Georgia and it was pretty tough to go to sleep at night. But I'm a fragile flower. It must be dark, quiet, and 68 degrees for me to sleep well. With three pillows and two blankets. No negotiation.0

In Dallas around September we get massive cricket swarms.. so many we have to walk on them yeah, but I've never seen so many cicadas that we had to walk on them. Maybe this summer will be weird.0 -
I actually am from Florida where cicadas are an alarm clock and mosquitoes bite like horse flies  no one believes me when I say they bite harder in Florida...0

They're pretty bad in Minnesota too. There's a reason those guys say the mosquito is the state bird.0 -
There's a guy online who posted the map of the exact locations being hit with the swarm.

click the brood map II on the right to see if you're getting swarmed. I'm not. Woot!0 -
best gif evar!
Also I like how the cicadas sound. But being in Fl bugs are generally a pain. I start sporting mosquito bites from now to Sept. It's not a good look.0 -
I saw some dirt mounds today that are an indicator that they are ready to come up soon...uh oh! I'm not ready for this! lol0
-
They were not too bad in Northern NJ in 1996 supposedly the rockier the ground the less of them you'll see but what do I know.0
-
This makes me happy that I live in Canada... I dont think I would be able to handle that0
-
Iccccck! Are there fewer in urban settings???0
-
In Jamaica we have crickets so if it's any thing like that, now that I'm in DC I hope they stay away..0
-
PHEW!! looks like I'm way way to far upstate NY to be freaked out by them!! of course, since its still snowing maybe they'd just freeze to death anyway :laugh:0
-
Feeling very lucky to live in California right now. I have an aversion to plagues.0
-
I love cicadas! I'm in the DC Metro area and the last huge cicada infestation was in 2004 so I'm looking forward to it. I have a picture of one sitting on my finger. My daughter is still not over the trauma! lol0
-
As long as they bring beer and chips they'll be cool with me0
-
I love them! The sound, the way their wings look & the cool carcass left behind. I believe their is someplace that makes jewelry out of the wings.
I like them too. I think they're relaxing.
I haven't seen jewelry made from the wings but I found a pin once made from copper plating one of their left over exoskeletons. I bought it for a friend who collects cicada stuff.
I like 'em!0 -
Those are the creepiest bugs EVER!0
-
Ugh, I'm having heart palpitations just thinking about it. I have a horrible hear of bugs and of course I'm in Jersey, right where it's supposed to be bad! :sad:0
