Question: running on sand?

Hey all! I am a beginning runner/jogger/crawler. I completed a 5k and can usually run 3 miles on a workout so I signed up for a 10k with my friend. However, I didn't realize it is on hard packed sand. I am considering getting new shoes for this. Any ideas on what type would be best for that kind of surface? I am a mid foot runner with a high arch so when I run on sand barefoot I usually get this awful rubber-band-breaking pain in my arch and I want to avoid that. Any ideas?

I don't know about shoes. But, have you ever put "Superfeet" insoles in your shoes? They are great arch supports. I think if you had those in your shoes, it would not matter what type of shoe you wore.
You can get them at any running store --about $40.0 -
On vacation I had no choice but to do my runs on the beach, I would say it was hard packed sand, there was really no difference for me, except having to cross a swallow stream and my sneakers got a little smelly form the salt water and sand.0
