Fluid in knee cap from exercising

I do a lot of lunges and squats in my exercising for the past 3 months. I haven't changed anything in my workouts. The other day my knee started hurting right above the knee cap. Now I have fluid in my knee and it is very uncomfortable. Has anyone else gotten a similar injury from workouts or sports? However..I have a 1 yr old and am CONSTANTLY on my knees chasing him around and changing him. Could that be it too? And how long does it usually take for the swelling to subside?
Thanks! Happy Mother's Day!!
