Calories burned walking on treadmill

Hi Guys

I know this is a generalisation as the results are diferent for everyone depending on age, weight, sex etc but roughly speaking, how many calories would be burned walking on a treadmill at 4mph?

I have been using the rough figures of 35 cals per mile walking at that speed (which takes into account what I would have burned sitting doing nothing) and 70 cals per mile running at approx 6mph (also taking into account cals burned doing nothing).

Does that seem reasonable? I'm 28 year old female, and weigh 115lbs. I'm at my maintenance weight now, so don't want to lose any more by undercalulating calories, but equally don't want to gain any by overcalucalting.

My treadmill is pretty old now so if I do 5 miles walking at 4mph it always tells me I have burned 600 calories which i know is nonsense. I can't afford a heart rate monitor so can't do it that way.

Am I about right?

    5 miles at 4 miles per hour = 585 calories, according to this site's exercise database for the 'treadmill,'--for someone who is 115 lbs.
    so your treadmill is still doing a good job.:smile:

    I would say no...
    What incline are you walking at?
    I am 142 lbs. Walking 5 miles shouldn't be more than 500 calories, it should actually be a little less. I burn 500 calories when I run 5 miles.

    I have always been told that you burn more walking a mile then running a mile because it takes longer. But if you are walking for 30 mins you will burn less than if you run for 30 mins.

    i'm not walking at an incline at the moment, which is why i know that the treadmill is drastically over-estimating the amount burned.

    you will certainly not burn more walking a mile than running a mile - when you run a mile you've done the same distance but in a quicker time ie. more work has bee n performed. More work requires more energy expended ie. calories burned, simple really!
