Glucosamine/Chondroitin to prevent joint damage?

Question:

I'm three weeks into the C25K running program. My family has a history of joint problems; my father had to stop running in his 50s due to joint pain and one of my active uncles has undergone two joint replacements.

Recently my father recommended going on something like Osteo Bi-Flex since it helped his knees in the past and staying on it to prevent joint deterioration from exercise.

I'm hesistant to start down that road, as I have read that staying on supplements for extended periods of time is not a good idea.

Thoughts/experience with this?

you can do it without supplements.

just make yourself some bone broth and use it in your meals! it's full of both glucosamine and chondroitin and it's 100% natural and bio-available.

I just wrote a blog post about it: http://teamreddy.blogspot.com/2013/04/whats-deal-with-bone-broth-and-how-do-i.html

My husband has been using this supplement for years on Dr. instructions. He says his knees are so much better when using it than when he doesn't use it. He stopped using it for a couple months and the knee pain came back. Went back on it and the knee pain went away. I'm not recommending it by any means, but what works for one person may not work for someone else. Ask your Dr. if you have any questions.
