Calories and weight

3500 calories equate to a pound. Two cups of water weigh a pound. I'm having a difficult time wrapping my mind around the energy concept of how the two connect. If you lose a pound from mowing your lawn, how much is transpiration and respiration and where does losing some calories fit in? Maybe you could tell me what is going on. And please, speak as you might to a young child. Or a golden retriever.

it takes 3500 calories to create enough mass to gain one pound (or, it takes burning 3500 calories to lose enough mass to rid yourself of one pound). 2 cups of water weighs one pound. just because it weighs the same doesn't mean it has the same caloric content. losing water weight is temporary and often a side effect of losing fat (sweat). that's why the scale isn't always a very good indicator of your progress - it measures EVERYTHING, not just fat.
