Does Ice Cream have Good or Bad fat in it?

Does Ice Cream have Good or Bad fat in it?

I'm only eating about 74% of fat target so thought I could afford to add some to my smoothies...

It's the sugar that's bad in ice cream. If you want some decent fats, add peanut or almond butter.

Some won't hurt you, you have to enjoy life too just not too often because sugar seems to be the bad guy now days. Not sure how right that is for all people though. Homemade would be best or a very good quality one when you do. Saturated fats aren't dangerous we are now told.
  • Sugar is the one thing I am always over target for, but I am still under for total carbs.

I've been thinking sugar isn't my enemy because my body can burn it fast, and then get back to burning fat. Is that flawed thinking?

Is there a decent low sugar ice cream out there maybe?

It wasn't so much looking to add fats, as being able to and stay under target. And thinking a scoop of ice cream would make a fruit smoothie so much nicer.

Got a suggestion on the best type for me?

You could try that but you'd get the same effect from yogurt with vanilla extract or cinnamon. Putting ice cream in a smoothie is a bit of a waste for me. I love Ice Cream and haven't cut it out. I buy the best I can afford and eat it in small quantitys that are portion controlled and keep it in the outside freezer so I have to walk further to get it! If you have cals left you could do both of those things!

My guys mom really loves anything by blue bunny. Idk though cause it has a lot of fake sugars and i heard our bodys have a hard time digesting that or something. I have dryers original french vanilla in my house most of the time because it is the guys favorite. I like dryers churned. I think it has half the sugar and a third the fat.. But it is smooth and creamy. If you want full fat ice cream.. I would buy pints of baskin robbins myself. Pralines and cream is amazing. Their vanillas not bad either. Expensive.. But it is, to me, real ice cream :)

I wouldn't want to waste a really good icecream in a smoothy if you are trying to drop weight! Low fat yogurt yes but iceceam is for not for wasting in a drink where you barely know all those calories are hidden in there! If you love it then eat and enjoy it by itself sometimes.

There are some no sugar added icecreams. Around hear blue bunny has some flavors that are no sugar added(I'm in texas and I don't know the reach of the brand) NOT all of their flavors are, just to be clear. My mom likes the double strawberry one. I don't know if the have artificial sweetener to make up for it though- if that matters. Personally I think sugar and fat are both fuel, as long as I'm getting my essential fats and essential protein, I don't care where my calories come from. Granted I've only lost 3lbs this round(since late January) but I didn't gain the quit smoking weight(while eating to maintain) so I count 10lb there, or at least 5lb right? lol. This way of thinking has really helped my adherence and cravings. I do try to eat lean meats and plenty of veggies ~4 days a week... may not be the best, but the difference between a diet and a lifestyle is if you can stick with it! Diets fade, but this I can do. :)

EDIt- yogurt is good at adding extra flavor without adding extra fat or some protein powders(I used strawberry powder w/ smoothies) or the frozen strawberries in light syrup, I find these quite satisfying as I prefer to fully enjoy my icecream(which is typically full fat, sugar, and flavor!)

Look for the TCBY frozen yogurts. I *love* the peach, and imagine it would be great in your smoothies.

A scoop of good ol vanilla Blue Bell is great, too.

Good fat, bad fat... meh. If you have room for it, have at. If you are having your sugar fairly close to your workouts, you are right- it burns off pretty quick. Unless you are diabetic, you really don't need to look too closely at your sugar- especially natural sugars from fruit. I go over mine just drinking milk, and I'm not about to give that up! I just try to watch the sugar I get from packaged sweets.

There are plenty of skinny/healthy people who eat ice cream, and there's no reason you can't be one of them. Moderation and all that jazz.

Transfats are the only fat we really need to be concerned about so try to avoid those in whatever you buy. Read labels.

I have about 40 grams of no fat yoghurt per 400ml serve now. But the cals are good. 180 calories for the one I made last night. Any suggestions of what I could add (and/or take out) to make it a bit creamier?

I guess full cream milk for one, but i don't think that will do it alone. Maybe just some cream? No sugar there.

Anyone know if the fat in pure cream is good or bad?

I had one for a snack around midnight. Put one in the fridge for breakfast, and one in the freezer to try and make it into something like ice cream but that didn't work, it was was too icy.

    IT HAS TASTY FAT!

Yes, moderation is the key with the sugar issue, providing you don't have some sort of metabolic condition. I'm also echoing the people suggesting you just eat a bit on it's own rather than throw it into your smoothie. But if you insist, have at it.

Fat in full fat dairy is a healthy saturated fat.

I think I agree with this after reading the responses.
  • Thanks for all the really helpful responses!

If I come up with a recipe that turns out like a cup of fruity soft serve I'll post it for anyone else interested in that sort of thing. ;)

I feel the same way about adding cream too. If you absolutely have to though, make the smoothie with yogurt and vanila extract and put a bit of squirty cream on the top? I'd rather have a big bowl of berries with a squirt of cream on though. I don't have smoothies very often and whe I do my faves are more juice based. (eg.Orange,Watermelon and mint) Ice Cream wise I buy Magnum Minis at 180 cals or After Dinner Magnums at 100. They satisfy both ice cream and chocolate cravings. I don't eat much artificial sweetners as they do trigger cravings but on ocassion when I lived in the UK I bought Skinny Cow or WW ice cream which was ok. Also, I live in Cyprus so our Greek Yog is good I don't need to add anything to it!

To me it looks too complicated, it looks like a confusion of flavors. I would try picking a flavor and go with that. Start with a base that you want your smoothie to taste like(mine was berries, I had a strawberry, blue berry, raspberry frozen mix that was my usual base) then I would add lightly sweetened strawberries or a ripe banana or low fat yogurt(low fat, not non fat-usually a better flavor in my experience) or almond milk(my choice sweeteners) then I would experiment with add ins, things that I know I should eat that I don't eat enough of these included thing like good fats(flax seed, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado-though I prefer those raw n solo mmm), extra greens such as spinach(which surprisingly can go in just about anything as an add in with little flavor change, it's biggest impact is color), kale(a bit stronger than spinach n a touch poky if ur blender's not great), or spirulina. also sometimes protein powder as a sweetener, but it depends on the mix. so that's my suggestion, simplify the flavor n start very basic with the main theme.
smoothie = base + sweeteners + good fat + extra nutrients

edit- it was easier to aim for a sorbet texture than icecream so mine had a good bit of ice too and I ate them immediately b4 they melted. yum(til the blender broke)

The problem with sugar is how it's metabolised. Unlike proteins etc, sugar has one purpose - instant energy. It immediately ups your blood glucose levels and if it's not used, it's stored as fat. When it comes to proteins, complex carbs... they can be broken down to glucose if your body needs the energy... but otherwise your body will use them for cell repair and production.

And if you're already consuming lots of sugar (fruit, while having good sugar, is still sugar)... it reeeally won't serve you to add more to a smoothie. You're better off being under fats than way over on sugar. Yoghurt is a good substitute if you're trying to create a creamier texture, but go for a *natural* greek yoghurt - less flavouring and no added sugars, because you'll already be getting plenty from your fruit :)

I'd like to just add that eating all of those foods instead of making them into a drink will make you feel like you are having a big meal because you have to chew them all and it takes time to do that. The longer it takes to eat something the fuller you will feel so although this is all rather healthy and a lovely thing to do I think it should be a every other day thing maybe or less. Just my thoughts just if you love this then of course go for it as long as it fits your calories, macros and you are happy!

The other thing is frozen banana slices that are then pureed up is icecream like so try that instead of fresh. Hope that wasn't already said, didn't read back again.

I wanted to go for a fruit salad sort of effect is why so many flavors. Apart from listed ingredients I also have mango and kiwi fruit and apples, so I could have gone even crazier if i wanted :)

I put flaxmeal in just about every smoothie i make. (despite the heavy calorie cost) Just didn't want the grit in this one. I'd use some flaxseed oil if I had it.

I also put kale in just about everything. And only needing a cup a day to meet my 'multivitamin' needs, I didn't need to add it here.. where the main aim is 1) inviting like soft serve, 2) filling (big serve size per calorie) and 3) under 200 cals per serve and 4) balanced on daily nutrients I need.

I am leaning toward putting it all in a bag and freezing it for 60-90 minutes first. Taking out half the ice cubes and replacing them with cream.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and info.

I think I'd make up a 3 serve mix once, maybe twice a week. One for evening snack, one for breakfast and probably refreeze the third and try and turn into ice cream again the next night.

The banana idea sounds like it might be yummy. Might try that for fun sometime :)
