husband losing weight excercising only

So back in February I got a fire lit under my butt to start eating healthy and exercising. I got a Jillian Michaels dvd and started doing that every day. after a couple weeks I purchased a couple more of dvds for when I was ready to move on. Seeing me working out motivated my husband to start working out also. I lost a few pounds doing the first dvd but did feel a lot slimmer just from all the muscle I'd built. After doing the next video I lost another 8 lbs. I've been working out almost every day. usually take one day off to rest. But I've also been watching my calories and rarely going over my calorie limit. Now my husband hasn't changed his diet at all, just working out almost everyday and he's lost 15 lbs in 6 weeks! I'm very happy for him but I'm also very jealous!! I feel like if he lost 15 lbs with just exercise then I should've lost like 30 lbs because I did both exercise and watching what I'm eating. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. This weight loss journey has just been very frustrating and I just really needed to vent.

yeah, men tend to lose weight more quickly than women do. They have a higher metabolic rate, I believe, & less body fat overall. So just by upping his physical activity, your husband was able to drop the weight, no problem. But try not to focus on him---he has an unfair advantage Keep doing what you're doing, & don't get discouraged!0

Don't let this frustrate you. Been there done that! Men just lose weight easier and faster. I can eat like a saint and bust my rear exercising, he can eat whatever he wants and more than me and lose at my same pace or faster. You just have to learn to not measure your progress against him. Continue to reinforce how much better you feel about yourself and knowing your doing the right thing and let that motivate you. I know it's hard, but it's not going to change.0

Your husband is clearly eating below is total daily calorie expenditure and that is why he is losing weight. If he's managing to do it without calorie counting like you're doing, then more power to him. There is no magic to this.0

Typically larger bodies means more lean body mass... also more muscle. This all means guys have a higher BMR, which means that we can eat more, and still lose weight.
My BMR is 2800 calories... my wife's is 1600. It is a lot easier for me to create a calorie deficit than it is for her.
This same situation applies to you and your hubby. It's just easier for us :bigsmile:0 -
It all comes down to science. He is at a calorie deficit and upped his metabolism by working out.
Are you eating enough??0 -
I agree with the penguin/duck thing. If he's losing weight without adjusting his diet then it simply means his net energy intake previously was slightly above his body's needs, and his exercise has bumped it to below his body's needs. Not really anything more to it.0

Men lose easier. This is the case for every couple I know that has tried to lose weight. It is incredibly frustrating for the woman in the relationship, but it is what it is. Stay focused on YOUR progress! You are doing FANTASTIC!!!0

I'd read somewhere recently that a study done showed that men need to only have a deficit of 2500 cals to lose a pound too, while women need the traditionally quoted 3500. How true this is, I'm not sure but that could be yet ANOTHER reason why guys can drop weight faster!
Congrats to you for taking control of your health and pushing through those DVDs. That's awesome!0 -
Focus on YOU! You say you are losing pounds and feeling slimmer from the exercise - is that not what your intent was? YES it was so you are meeting YOUR expectations. This is not a competition between the two of you, celebrate that you are both getting healthier. Remember too that it didn't take you over night to get out of shape so don't expect to counter those past choices instantly. Good luck and enjoy the journey!0

^^ The penguin is terribly offended . . . puffin maybe, but duck?!! smh :laugh:0 -
I agree with others that say he is eating at a deficit. Keep in mind, you can still eat ANYTHING as long as you are in a caloric deficit. You don't have to just eat grilled chicken and veggies to lose weight. Also, as women, we tend to lower our calories too low as most magazines/nutritionists/experts suggest. I'm learning we don't have to cut so much out of our "diets" to lose weight.0

It took me a full year to lose 28 lbs. When I was around the 25 lb loss mark, my hubby decided to be more careful about his food choices (he does all the cooking so he altered the recipes to be more healthful). He lost 30 lbs in 4 months. He maintains his loss simply by watching what he eats. No exercise. Meanwhile, I run 20+ miles a week, lift and do various other activities to MAINTAIN my loss. Basically, life is unfair! LOL!!0

thanks for all the input, makes me feel a little better. Darn boys and their advantages!0
