BodyPump for Weaklings??

I know the 'n00b gains' isn't exactly the most scientific of terms, but considering that I am indeed a weight lifting n00b, do you think that I could gain or at least maintain muscle while in a deficit doing BodyPump? It certainly feels more like a lifting class than cardio to me. Please note that I am weak enough to the extent that doing one push up was a major accomplishment.
I mention 'newbie gains' because I've read that sometimes, if you've never lifted before, you could actually gain a little muscle while losing fat. No proof of this though.
