Wide Grip Lat Pulldown Question

I'm trying to heavy lift to fail and I have a question about Lat pulldowns.
SO far I've been lifting about 40-55 lb and I've noticed its less than a lot of women lift in stage 1 of NROL4W. I generally consider myself fairly strong for an inexperienced female lifter, so once I noticed the diagrams on the machine and compared it with what I've been doing I noticed I may have been doing it wrong:
When I started lifting 40ish the first time, it was an experimental weight and it felt too light until I lowered the bar all the way to my lap. When I'm lifting 55 now pulling the bar all the way to my lap I lift to fail in about 12-15 reps. Should I instead only be pulling the bar down to my shoulders and lifting heavier? It hadn't really occurred to me until seeing that other beginners were lifting at least as much if not more.
Thanks in advance!

Hi! You should only be pulling to your upper chest. Bodybuilding.com has the best demonstration videos for just about any strength move you can think of.
