How to break the pyschological aspect..weight gain.....HELP!

Hi everyone,

Since September 2012 I had lost 100lbs through the Cambridge Weight Plan and then Calorie Counting. I didn't follow the Cambridge Maintenance steps, but did introduce food slowly over a two month period (I was intending on staying on CWP but had a chest infection for a month so needed to overcome that). I continued to lose weight which was great and I was happy that I was finally logging all my food, controlling what I eat and starting to plan the next stage: fitness.

However....last week even though my calories were still for the most part under goal set by MFP (my goal is 1570 to lose 1.5lbs per week) - I was eating around 1400-1500 and had one day where I ate 1700, I gained 3lbs in two days. I knew this was likely to be water weight especially as my body has gone through a lot of late (chest infection for a month and without going into too much details..I am having problems with the mirena)....then I gained another 1lb the next day.

Part of me is thinking the weight I lost in the previous weeks while being unwell wasn't true weight if that makes sense but I had assumed (especially as I had been eating basics for two months and proper food for around 3 weeks) that my body had adjusted.

Even repeatedly telling myself its water weight, the psychology of it is hard - I have continually lost (with a few weeks of staying the same) for 7 months! Yesterday I lost control and binged for the first time in months (thereby probably gaining true fat)...and this morning I am feeling guilty, fed up and wanting to eat more! Clearly I am still an emotional eater! It could be hormones connected to above as well I suppose. I think I am now at a 6lb gain..in a week and a half! :(

I dont want it to spiral out of control....I'm getting married in August and ideally had wanted to get down to 168lbs (Im about 201lbs now - had got down to 195lbs).

Any tips/advice greatly received.

I am 5ft 11, female, 27, around 201lbs - MFP says I should eat 1570 to lose 1.5lbs a week...if anyone has any tips of calories/exercise which would help my metabolism if it is the cambridge weight plan and/or my body just having a fit!

Thanks in advance!

I only have advice on the binge incident.

    Another MFP'r coined this one.

Imagine you are riding cross country on a horse. You fall off. Do you go back to the starting point and get back on or do you get on right where you fell off?

    Does that help?

Just keep telling yourself the truth.

you're body is probably freaking out a bit, and clearly you're retaining water, try to up your water intake and maybe watch your sodium. Also try to log anything that you're going to eat before you eat it. If you even have the thought of logging then it could delay or prevent a binge. You have done a fabulous job, remind yourself of that. Keep in mind all the things you did right and then keep doing them! Make a list if you need to. If you think snacking could help you not binge get broccoli and celery and carrots and those sorts of things to munch on, just weight out x amount in the morning and allow yourself to snack on that portion during the day. Good luck! I doubt you ate 21000 extra calories in one week(approximate amount of calories in six pounds of fat) is it possible that your binge or extra foods were high sodium? I'd try to stick to the plan and maybe skip the scale for a week or two. You're doing great and @ctalimenti I like that horse analogy! :)

I know seeing the scale is hard when it moves up instead of down, but you have to look at yourself too. Use a measuring tape instead and a scale once in a while, of course we all know you can not gain weight that fast, so i suggest you eat more healthy than you have been eating. You will see the scale coming down as well.

    Hope you are successful =)
  • Thanks for the advice all! I like the horse riding analogy - I ride so that means something! I'll try to stay away from the scales, continue to log and was planning on joining the gym too. Hopefully it will help!
