Are there less calories in certain ice cream flavours?

I know the question might sound ridiculous, but wouldn't there be less calories, for example, in an ice cream requiring the addition of more flavour agents as they take up some of the place the milk, sugar etc... could take? Or could there be less calories in fruit ice cream (raspberry, mango etc) than in chocolate ice cream?

It probably depends on what flavoring they use and how much (sometimes it'll be 1-5% only). For example probably less calories in ice cream that uses real fruit, compared to one that use artificial stuff (liquids, powders). Chocolate is usually higher because it has more sugar I think.

usually the more air the churn into the ice cream the low the calories are, plus you have a whole line of Stevia and Splenda sweetened Ice Creams, and plus the frozen Yogurts and now frozen Almond milk and soy milk varieties. The choices are endless but I prefer Ice Cream. I have trouble eatting 1/2 cup so I usually get skinny Cow Ice Cream sandwiches, they are just enough for me.

Well, if you think of some of teh premium ice creams like Ben and Jerrys. itll depend on the things like nuts, caramel sauce, marshmallow bits etc.

But for standard scooping ice cream I'd say there's very little difference across the flavours.

Depends on the brand for certain flavours like chocolate vs vanilla. If they're adding real chocolate it'll end up slightly more. In general anything with nuts, chocolate chips, caramel swirls etc tends to have more. Ice creams made with egg yolks and/or a higher percentage of milk fat have more (think Haagen Dazs and Ben and Jerry's). You end up with fewer calories if there's more air whipped into the ice cream, if its made with lower milk fat (tend to use more stabilizers in that case). Fruit sorbets may or may not have fewer calories per serving as they're often very sugar heavy and more dense than a comparable whipped, milk-based ice cream.

yes, there are different calorie amounts for different flavours. Last time I bought it, Neopolitan for example was 120 for 1/2 a cup whereas an extra loaded one with chocolate bits was over 240 and i'm sure there are even higher cal ones and possibly lower ones.

Thanks for all the answers! :flowerforyou:

Yeah, i've also been considering sorbets and frozen yogurt but the place we've been planning to go to doesn't seem to have either available. And considering the warm weather we are FINALLY having here in Berlin, I really don't want to skip the occasion of eating a frozen treat :blushing:

If you're eating out its going to be virtually impossible to tell: The biggest difference between calories in ice cream depend on the density rather than on the flavour - density is going to be controlled by the type of cream and how much air they get in it. So unless you're planning to weigh your portion you're going to struggle to know. Also the type of cream will impact the fat content too.

Nutty ice cream will be higher cal than fruit.

Advice: Ask for a small portion and don't worry about anything else.
