I recently picked up this book after recommendations, I've not finished it yet but so far he says everyone is deficient in vitamins and minerals and we need to be having a lot more than the typical rda. He's against meat and milk and pro high carbs 65% medium protein 20% and fat 15% (I think) it seems like no matter what we eat its still got problems. I got confused when he said grains can actually be bad for us causing many intolerances, indigestion etc but in the next chapter is advising we eat 4 portions f grain a day. What's that ask about? Any one else ever read his stuff, what do you think?

Hi, I know this post has been here a while but just came across it today. I'm a huge fan of Patrick Holford. I have reduced my depression, and lost weight by following his optimum nutrition book, now trying to cope with peri-menopause too.

The grains thing is a little confusing but basically he seems to say cut out modern high intensity farmed grains like wheat (especially white versions) and replace with whole grain spelt/rye/quinoa/rice etc.

I don't think it's fair to say he's against meat of dairy, just that he suggests they should be limited. I have a couple of his cook books and they contain plenty of meat and dairy as well as some great fish and veggie recipes.

The one thing he is completely against is refined sugar! I switched to natural sugars in everything (except the odd chocolate bar) and my sweet tooth has gone, I never get cravings for sweet things anymore.
