Annoyed: A Rant.

I was at the track last night, just walking with my mom. I decided to do a few 100-200m sprints (my inner track team member has never quite left). While we're walking, a man shows up and begins to jog at a pretty decent clip.
I sprint the straights, walk the curves about 3 times before getting ready to flip tires. After my last sprint, the guy jogs by and smirks, "Nice way to WARM UP."
It bothered me on a number of levels. First, i could have commented on his pace. I didnt-he may be a marathoner for all i know.
He knew nothing about my goals. Id already completed 2 hours of weightlifting and another run earlier that day.
Im not a jogger-nor do i run over a mile. i sprint-get it done, and go home.
It made me realize how fast we are to judge people despite having no idea what their goals are. I powerlift-i have no desire or need to run for an hour. He may have no need to sprint. Or maybe he is a sprinter, but had already worked out and was just recovering.
It just irritated me that he felt the need to be snide (like a lot of people on here can be) when he had no odea if i had been there for five minutes or three hours already.

No Kidding...what a jerk. What business is it to him.:noway:0

To op: Then again, he may just be reallllllllllllllllly baaaaaaaad at making a pass. I wouldn't take it to heart. He means less than a fly on the wall. :flowerforyou:0

Maybe he was just complimenting you and you were feeling defensive? It didn't immediately strike me as a d-bag statement.0

i think i would have punched him in the throat0

LOL yeah but I would keep that to being a visual aid rather than a reality.
But, seriously some people like to look stupid others like to open their mouth's and prove that they are.0 -
People suck! You know you worked your *kitten* off! Screw that guy!0
-
It seems to me that you're making a lot of assumptions about what this guy meant, and you could be totally wrong. Maybe he just said the first thing off the top of his head to connect/acknowledge. I've made a few off the wall comments to strangers in the same place doing something similar to what I was doing. Who knows, maybe I even inspired a rant.0

Screw him and shine on, you crazy diamond!0

People are insecure. Some are constantly trying to find ways to make others feel inferior in a misguided attempt to feel better about themselves. Don't take it personally. Instead, keep taking care of yourself.0

Yeah! Great advice and song!0 -

Am I the only one who sees the irony in this statement?
Some people are just *kitten*. Who the heck cares what he says.0 -
"sticks and stones"
just ignore it, life has a lot more difficulties to overcome x0 -
You should have said "Shut it eff face"0
-
i think it was a fumbled attempt at a pass0

WOW!!! You were having a BAD day, huh! You are easily offended. Yes, people give OPINIONS when not asked for, just tell them. Hey, if they have the NERVE to dish it out, they should be able to take what comes their way.0

Did you answer back or did he just jog off into the sunset? I think you're reading a little too much into it, based on that. I slightly agree with other posters, I think he was trying to make a pass. Failing at it epically, but with good intentions.
Don't let a random comment ruin your entrie day. You know what you've done, you know that you're an awesome person, don't care about what others say.0 -

NOPE...Most people do not "suck", some of the stuff they DO/Say may suck. :ohwell:0 -

I'll assume that it was his way of being encouraging ~ to simply cheer you on, thinking that it would be a boost ~ only clearly a miss. There's an oddity to running, in that our fellow runners (interval runners to long distance runners) will assume that to run at all or if they assume themselves to be expert track/running athletes, their counsel will equally benefit you and is exactly what you're seeking to accomplish to make your goals, determining you as too green.
Edited to add: i doubt very much that his intentions were directed at you to insult.0 -
I empathise with you - if I was in that situation I'd probably be put-out too...I know I tend to be sensitive.
My own little example - I was out biking with my husband and coming back into my street I was quite tired. A neighbour walking down the street called out "any slower and you'd be going backwards". I saw red for a bit, I must admit.
We cannot know the tone of how he spoke to you but maybe change your mindset to he was actually paying you a compliment. He made an assumption that you were warming up - easy for anyone to make a mistake like that - but he might have meant "I like your warm up routine". What he should have said was 'I like your cool down.' Choose the positive, reject the negative and be proud of every step you take.0 -

^^^ this
maybe he genuinely thought you were doing a warm up, and that it was a good warm up, and just wanted to say something positive....?0 -
It wasnt so much WHAT he said as it was HOW it was said-its hard to type without a sarcasm font. it came out with a "greater than thou" tone. The local track has all types-one guy walked a lap, then stretched out in the middle of the track to do 10-15 situps.before leaving. ianother arrives to do suicide sprints on the field before running bleachers 50+ timed and finishing with 100 burpees (tbh-he kind of terrifies me. not in.a bad way-just like...how are you not having a stroke?!)
People making comments doesnt really phase me unless the tone is snide.
I didnt answer him (i was sucking wind at the time or my mouth would havr overloaded my butt)
I DO think if i see him again and he decides to be snarky-ill challenge him to race0 -
It is annoyingly hard to convey tone of voice in a post, that's for sure.
I used to be so self-conscious and sensitive that if I would see 2 people say something to each other and laugh, I would KNOW that they were talking about and making fun of me. I decided in counseling to take the attitude that what other people do or say have nothing to do with me, and most of the time I'm sure that's true; I'm not so important that other people have reason to be standing around talking about me. In the process, I think I have become oblivious to what are probably obvious insults to anybody else. Who cares? I'm a lot more comfortable in my own skin this way.0 -
...the guy jogs by and smirks, "Nice way to WARM UP."
Just sounds like street type harassment to me -- at least he didn't say something crude or creepy. But yeah, total jerk.0 -

Clearly his tone was offensive from how reactively perturbed you still are about it ~ Squashing it and walking away evidently isn't an option, for it'll possibly increase more disrespect your way. You feel it's appropriate you deal ~ you'll deal.
This =>I empathise with you - Choose the positive, reject the negative:)0 -
Some people are like that. I like to be sugary sweet to them. I used to be a receptionist in a law firm. I used to get all sorts of crappy calls and each time I got a crap call, I'd guilt the hell out of them by being sugary sweet and overly nice to them.0
-
Who cares what his comment was you should have tunnel vision and only focused on your goal. Everyone starts somewhere, never give in. Only focus on your goals, nothing else matters.0

Yes - I thought this was a bit rich as well!0 -
I know you say it was the tone he used, but are you 100 % positive he meant it like that? I too at first thought it was a lame attempt at making a pass, it might have been his way to try and get you to keep going, with him. Or it could have been just encouragement, or a compliment. Maybe he honestly thought you were just warming up. I dunno, I just think you read too much into it.0
