Square dancing is a wonderful exercise that burns a ton of calories, is social, a lot of fun, keeps you fit, and something you can do until you reach 100.

Fact: in 90 minutes of square dancing, you burn 560 calories an hour.

You can dance with your husband, or you can dance with your best friends (roles are interchangeable). There is a huge community of square dancers in 52 countries world-wide, and more than 1000 clubs in Canada alone.

For a taste of it, see this clip from the opening ceremonies of the Calgary Olympics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv9BKTNy7Kw

Who else on MFP shares an enthusiasm for square dancing? Let's hear from you about this great form of exercise!

And let's be honest. He still looks a bit on the pudgy side.

I'm not what you call a square dancer, but when I was growing up, the community had a weekly "square dance" during the winter months (community of farmers, too busy in the summer)...

My sisters are teachers, and their school was having some sort of fund raising contest where the teachers' names were on jars, and the students voted for which teachers they wanted to see dance by putting dollars in the jars...both my sisters were in the "winners circle" and chose to square dance. Needless to say, I got elected to dance with them...we only did 5 minutes and it KILLED me!!

We decided that we need to start square dancing again!!

That is another thing that I like about square dancing: its multi-generational aspect. In my basics group, we have 2 teens, folks who moved here from Poland, China and the Middle East, young couples, and some folks in their 70ies who are helping everybody learn the newest moves!
