Knee Pain During (Attempted) Side Splits!

Hi everyone!
I have been doing a lot of post-workout stretching to try and increase my flexibility. I'd love to be able to do the splits but I certainly still have quite a ways to go. My question is this: Whenever I try to stretch into side splits/box splits, I get really intense knee pain on the inner surface of my knees - sometimes just one side and sometimes both. Even if I bring my legs closer together and just hold it longer I get this pain. Has anyone experienced this? Does anybody have any suggestions that may help me out?
