Knee pain...

Options
Towards the end of February/end of March (about a month into my weight loss journey) I hurt my knee.
I'm not sure what the incident was that started it all, but as I was walking into my house after work one night, this knee pain was suddenly there.
It was really really bad for about a week before it started to improve. Now I'm pretty sure I was overusing it, but the way the pain felt was odd to me.
For the most part, it didn't hurt to bend my knee, but if I tried to kneel down on my knee, I would immediately jump back up because there was an intense pain below my kneecap...
As if I stepped on a Lego with my knee, but the Lego was inside my knee lol... It also hurt if my knee happened to twist from side to side. And during that bad week my knee would also randomly give out... which was embarrassing and painful...
Like I said, pretty sure it was from overuse, because I had pain in both my knees, but my right knee was way worse. I've always had bad knees, but that was the first time they were a serious issue.
My knees are fine now, but every once in a while I feel a little pain in them. Does anyone know what exactly in my knee I messed up?

I don't know what you did, but I would suggest taking some time off and keep off it as much as possible. Go between ice and heat and take an Advil. Give yourself a few days of doing that. Plus go see a doctor.

I did something to my knee a couple summers ago (stood up after changing the baby on the floor and my knee cap actually popped out and went back in place. Found out from physio a muscle on the side of my knee was completely torn. It's just started to heal and that was 2 summers ago.)

When you go back to activity. Take your time. You don't want to hurt it worse.

this sounds familiar - try regularly stretching and foam rollering your IT Bands - when they are tight it can pull your kneecaps off their line. If it flares up again I would deffo go to see you doctor.

^ This. You're not seriously asking a bunch of people on the internet to diagnose your knee problem, are you?

As for stretching suggestion though, let me just tell you hell no, not before you speak to your doctor so you know what is going on. I re-injured a MCL sprain that way.

Do NOT stretch or mess around with the structures of your knee. Sounds like you have a problem with your meniscus subluxating.

    See your doctor.

Ihope you havent torn your meniscus. You got the classic signs of it. Stop wearing high heels and avoid activities with knee rotation involved. Most importantly Go see an orthopedic or sports doctor. You need an MRI for a more definitive diagnosis. Good luck!

Im not a Dr but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I have to agree, sounds like something with your meniscus.

    See a Dr.

All this. I began having knee pain after beginning an exercise program. I went to my doctor and am now in physical therapy for 8 weeks, and expect to be fully recovered when I'm done. There are so many different things that could be wrong, you need a professional to diagnose your issue before deciding what path to take to heal.

Geez people, you don't read very thoroughly, do you?
I said that my knees are fine now. This happened like two months ago. I just wanted ideas as to what it could be.
A little home care (rest, icing, braces) was all my knees needed. If it had lasted any longer then yes, I would have gone to the doctor. I'm not an idiot.

I don't think anyone thinks you are an idiot (well, I certainly don't.)

Having said that simply because the injury appears to have resolved doesn't actually mean it has. This is how recurring injuries (or sometimes worse) can happen.

It may well be you are fine in the long term. However, from what you have described, especially given you state you have a history of "bad knees" it is something to monitor carefully. Personally, I would still see your doctor....

Assuming its irritation from overuse like mine, my DR recommends Advil 1 hour before workout, plus ice after.

I had the same type symptoms a while ago. Medical authorities had conflicting theories. One diagnosed it as pre-pateller bursitis. Another dignosed as a sprained lateral ligament. Either way it took 9 mos to finally resolve. Please don't assume that you are 100% ok so quickly. Any problem with the knee takes a good length of time to completely heal. Take care!

I take great care not to injure my knees again now.
I will go to the doctor if something else happens with them, but until then, I have no insurance so I will just have to do my best to prevent another incident.

Go see a specialist please, I have had knee pain and it was actually torn meniscus.. it's your health so not worth gambling, because things like this can become life injuries. I had a spinal injury snowboarding and didn't skimp out of dr appointments, extra xrays etc etc even though it was only a compression fracture. Now it's completely healed and I'm glad I took the time! (of course spine and knee is different, but let me tell you... any long term joint/back pain is NOT fun!!)

See your doctor. You may get sent to an orthopedic doctor. It could be any number of things, from really benign stuff to more serious stuff. You can develop arthritis behind your kneecap (I've got it), or chondromalacia can cause kneecap pain, or meniscus injuries, or who knows what. What you don't want to do is make anything worse. Best to see the doc and rule things out or in so that you know exactly what you're dealing with and then work together toward resolving the issue(s).

    HTH! :)

You need to see a doctor or chiropractor! Your knee could be out of alignment and/or the tendon that runs down the leg from the knee could be injured. My husband just went to the dr. for the same thing. His tendon is strained, dr. gave meds and exercises to improve the knee function. Please don’t wait to long!

Just how you described the pain, It really does sound like a meniscus tear. It could be a very small one and once the inflamation goes down you will feel fine, but the injury is still there. It really just won't heal on it's own. I've done it myself and it's surprisingly easy to do and doesn't have to be a traumatic event. My brother had one and never went to the doctor and he would tear it again and again. He described it as his knee "popping out" and then back in again while playing sports. He never went to the doctor either because of not having insurance and by the time he went the doctor told him it was the worst tear he's ever seen.

I'm not telling you that story to scare you, but you need to be careful and avoid activities that would cause you to twist and turn you knee much. I would suggest working in some balance exercises (like yoga) to strengthen all of the support muscles in your knees.

But once you can go to the doctor please do so because leaving an injury like that (if that's really what it is) unattended can lead to arthritis down the road because the unrepaired meniscus will slide around and eventually wear down faster than normal. An MRI will let you know. Also, while you're young they can repair these, but once you get older they won't heal even with surgery and you will have to have the torn piece removed.
