I'm thinking of switching from whey to hemp protein powder. I am concerned about the taste though. I tried brown rice protein powder and it was horrible. Very gritty. Is hemp gritty? If you use it and like it, what brand / flavor to you buy?

Why change? I haven't heard good things about the taste.

I find I'm going way over my calcium goal every day with whey, and hemp has more iron, which I need.

Could you maybe mix some of the whey with some of the hemp? Maybe that way you would get a taste/texture that you like and get the iron that you need.

I suppose I could if needed, but I'm not sure if there is a need to mix it. Have you tried hemp? If so, did you like it?

I find that hemp protein is kind of gritty and doesn't have a great protein-to-calorie ratio. I get a blend of gemma pea/soy protein from True Nutrition and find the texture much closer to whey protein.

If you need to use up the hemp protein, mixing it into oatmeal helps disguise some of the "grittiness".

I use hemp powder all the time (and have for years), but if good tasting powder is something that you crave, you won't find it in any hemp powder. I would describe the taste as "earthy". Also, when I say "hemp powder" I am referring to pure 100% unflavored hemp powder (usually about 90 calories and 15 grams protein per ounce and 40% of drv Iron), not a dressed up protein powder with hemp as the primary protein source. But, hemp is soooo nutritious that you could add small amounts of it to your diet without noticing, I just wouldn't recommend using it as any sort of yummy meal replacement.

I haven't tried hemp yet. I'm looking for opinions to see if it sounds like something I'd like. I think I may check out the gemma pea/soy protein you mention. Thanks!!

It's really chalky, pea protein too. Why not just take an iron supplement or add mote iron rich food in your diet?

I eat beans and greens a lot. I usually meet the RDA but still I get turned away for giving blood sometimes. I've discussed with my doctor but she says it's not low enough to recommend a supplement, just too low share.

It's the calcium I'm more worried about. I guess I could try mixing the whey with water instead of soy/almond milk and see what that tastes like.

I have been using hemp protein and I really like it. I mix it with a bit of cranberry juice, almond milk and yogurt and some ice. It's satisfying and honestly I don't feel that the taste is bad. It breaks down faster in your system.
