I did this kind of diet lost 20lbs in a month it requires a major deficit and if you are not careful can weaken your immune system

I still have the weight off and am having to slowly add 100 or so calories more to my diet and work out harder to continue the weight loss

Zig zagging calorie plan is good to avoid plateau

I do have a crazy disciplined diet

No sugary drinks lots of water with lemon
100 grams of protein less then 100 carbs ( good carbs)
Lean meats leafy green vegetables high in nutrients (ice berg does not cut it)
    3 servings of fruit
    I also avoided artificial sweeteners

One free day if your able to handle it no more then 500 extra calories I'd say any how

(This is what I do not writing this as advice just as stating my experience)

I personally don't see anything wrong with going severely low carb for a week or so (if you can do it) in order to jumpstart weight loss or break a stall. That is what I do. I already limit carbs in general and rarely get above 100 in a day, but I also don't eat bread-type things (whole grain crackers sometimes) so it's fairly easy for me. If you are interested in severe low carb (>20/day), try the Atkins 2 week induction phase. I broke a stall in a big way doing this, now I am back to carbs in moderation. I agree the Atkins induction thing is not sustainable.
