If you have a smartphone you can get a free c25k app. I would deft reccommend that. I use the Zombie 5k, but Zen Labs has a free app. I'm not in the best shape and I'm up to jogging 3min non stop now so they work your way up0

I agree C25K is amazing! I am on Week 5 now. When I first started I couldn't even jog 60 seconds without getting winded. But now I can easily run 8 mins! The first few weeks were tough and I was so sore but after the 2nd week mark the aches and pains went away and I really found my stride. My best tip is to hang in there and keep at it!0

Couch to 5k is amazing, and the principle applies to any distance you want to manage. I'll be doing my first half marathon this summer....and I started out as someone who got out of breath when my nose ran.
Just for goodness sake keep going. The first run is pretty disheartening, but the next run you'll do better and it'll keep getting easier and easier and in a month you'll be shocked at how much better you're doing.0 -
I agree with everyone c25k. I had to try it twice. First time I kept getting strep throat (young child in daycare) and it interfered with my training. Second time, a year later it worked
Now, a year after that I regularly go for 2 hour runs with no walking breaks. I've got my second half marathon coming up too.0 -
c25k is a perfect place to start..
but get yourself some good quality shoes first, from a specialist running store!0 -
C25K is the best. Im getting ready to start week 7 and I've already signed up for my first 5K on April 28 Color Me Rad! So I am proof that it works, I never ran a day before I started this and now I'm slowly turning into a runner:)0

As everyone says, C25k is great,
Or you can check out Olympian Runner and gold medalist Jeff Galloway's way of running, which is pretty much like the other, starting with 10 seconds running/2 minutes walking. Interesting and encouraging web site.

Checking out both of these would probably be helpful.
Good luck, personally, I'm 56 years old and I started late February 2012 and did my first (and only, so far, cause I'm working in Saudi Arabia) 5K in August of 2012...... I'm hooked, am working up to a 10 now
Oh ya, I also lost 40 pounds in that span of time from starting to 5K and I wasn't counting calories with MFP, if I had been, probably would have done even better.0
