Is it true....

...that exercise is a GOOD stress reducer...or is that just a vicious rumor?

VERY true. I can go from being in the most frumpy mood ever to the best day ever with just even 15 min of exercise!

Absolutely. I've been working out my entire adult life and some of my best workouts have been on stressful days, releasing all that pent-up adrenaline. Despite a somewhat stressful job (I love it but occasionally there's too much to do), I sleep like a baby 99% of the time. If I gave up exercise I'd be on Xanax.

I've seen reports (though now I couldn't cite them) that while it works great for lots of people, it's not a guarantee. I went looking for that information because it's never really helped me feel better, no matter how long or how hard I work out (in fact, years ago I would run until I had an asthma attack *hoping* I might finally wear out my demons -- and yes, I've gotten professional help for that).

Cardio is supposed to be a great mood booster, but even though I am in a much better state of mental health and am able to exercise responsibly, I get no inherent pick-me-up from working out. I am proud of myself when I stick to my workout schedule on days I really don't want to do it, but I'm also proud of myself when I eat healthy despite how badly I want to overindulge. It kind sucks -- I could certainly use more ways to relieve stress

For me it is. I exercise hard and once I get into it, I don't think much about what is stressing me out and when I am done Whatever is bothering me doesn't seem so dire. Plus I feel so great just about getting it done that I find it hard to be stressed about other things.

Do it enough and you can replace stress with pain. Just ask my knees.

Absolutely true, if I don't train/have an activity I am in a very bad mood, when I train I feel happier, sleep better etc

Yes, working out really elevates my mood and usually whatever I am PO'ed about is beaten into submission.
  • I am inclined to believe it. Running does it for me, more than lifting.

Whenever I am pissed off about something, I take it out on barbells...or I do some kickboxing...and I always feel better afterwards.

Truth, 100%! And your performance even increases when you're angry or feel otehr emotions than sadness...Though when I feel down I can still manage a pretty good workout

Exercise reduces stress for me! In fact, if I think of stressful things (especially at work) while I exercise, I tend to work out harder, and destress even more effectively.
