So, I started to be a lot more serious about my fitness and healthy eating at the start of this year. I have now put a consistent effort into watching what I am putting into my mouth and making sure I exercise 5-6 times a week on top of the cardio I get from my job. I am very happy these days. I am not anywhere near my goal weight but...energetic, happy, and on my way there.
I have a boyfriend that is overweight. He is my big teddybear, I love him to death, I could care less about his weight based on appearance (have actually always been attracted to big burly men with beards ha ha) . However, I want to be able to do active things with him and I also don't want him to become diabetic or have a heart attack when he is 35. He is probably almost 100 overweight at this time and in January when I started to shape up I tried to encourage him. It didn't work and I saw myself becoming a food Nazi and I was annoying him. I then just made sure there was good options for him in the house for snacking, I cook him healthy meals and I encouraged going on walks etc. However, it is hard when the "boys" go for wings and beers after work two nights a week and when people at work have pizza day etc. Anyhow, I gave up pushing him in any way and realised he has to do it for himself.
Well.......on Friday he told me he would like to join a gym!!! Just came out of nowhere. He said that I am looking good these days, I am full of energy and he wants to keep up!!!!!! He wants to be my work out buddy! HA! Well, tomorrow we are going over to the gym for a tour and to sign up and I couldn't be happier with his decision. This is not yet a success story but its a start.
For anyone with a partner that is not as fit as them....don't push them, don't ever put them down (I never did that but just saying)...they need to do it on their own. The more you push the more they rebel.............each person needs to do it for themselves.
One day the two of us might post before and after photos on here..you never know!

That's brilliant!
My boyfriend is overweight too, and he saw how my body was changing and has stepped up and joined MFP! It's a great feeling when you're an inspiration to someone else!0 -
That is FANTASTIC!
I have the same "problem" with my husband. I, too, like big guys and I, too, don't believe that being critical or shaming is ever really appropriate. My husband is very overweight and diabetic. And currently unemployed. All of which translates into "incredibly sedentary".
Sometimes I can get him to walk the dogs with me. And he'll cook us relatively healthy meals. But I keep hoping that if I stick with it and show some progress, maybe I can inspire him or something....because nagging doesn't work.
Your story gives me hope that one days soon, he'll decide to get on board and join me in this process!0 -
gr8expectations.........In time,if you keep up with what you are doing he may see how you are feeling better, looking better and decide to make a change too. I am not sure what really sparked my boyfriends interest in getting more in shape but I think he is starting to see that the healthy food I feed him actually tastes good, he want to be able to share in some of the activities I do, and he is not dumb....he knows it is has been a long time coming.
I am looking forward to our "fitness dates"0 -
That's really great! It must be a huge relief to you that he's decided for himself that he wants to look and feel as great as you do. You've led by example and that's something that people really notice - even if they pretend not to!!
CONGRATS TO YOU BOTH!!0 -
I think you posted this in the right place. I see this as a success. I would love for my husband to go to the gym with me.0
