Anyone been to summer school?

Hi all,

I want to apply for a scholarship programme to go to summer school in Brussels, Belgium but I am unclear about how to make my application stand out from others. The general theme of the school is ‘Europe in the World’ and will have several lectures and seminars, presentations and group work. The selection criteria includes:
- They must demonstrate an understanding of how the Summer School may benefit them personally and aid their personal development
- They must show how they would contribute to the Summer School
- They should show an understanding of the content of the summer school and an ability to relate it to their studies and future plans
- Academic achievement will be a key element of the selection process

The programme states that the scholarship will be awarded to the "best second and final years students". My problem is that my grades last year were very average, some good and some very bad (including one fail, but a pass on a retake). I'm currently a Law student but I am taking a Politics and International Relations course on European Union Politics and it honestly been a breath of fresh air from 3 years of straight Law.. This year has been slightly better, including one which was one of the highest on the course, but it was for participation; not an essay.

Has anyone been to summer school or won an academic scholarship? Can you share your experiences? What advice would you give in terms of the application (it has to be 500 words).

Thanks.

PS Yes, I know this is a health and fitness website, but there are some very smart cookies on here in terms of fitness and I know there are some other college and university students that use this website, so their help would be great.
