To lose weight arnt you meant to have a calorie deficit? Or have I just got his all wrong...

Deficit is correct. However, many people think that means starvation. You must still feed your body. If you starve yourself your body will eat your muscles then you will become what is known as skinny fat. Although you will be reducing your weight, you will be reducing your muscle and not the fat. Your precent body fat will rise.
Long and short of it, you need a deficit. The deficit should allow for a 1 - 2 pounds a week at the most.0 -
Each pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories basically. If you cut your calories by 500 each day. You will loose 1lb a week. Trick is to never go above 500-1000 daily deficit depending on your size and weight0
