PROTEIN SHAKES OR NO PROTEIN SHAKES

Hi y'all, I'm hoping to get a 4-pack and toned body for the summer but i've heard that protein shakes are a good aid in building and maintaining muscle. So i'm living in the UK and was wondering what makes are good, cheap and tasty?:
> I'm a long distance runner
> Do I really need protein shakes?
> I want something natural(ish), none of that artificial or fatty nonsense!
> I'm at college so can only work out in evenings

IF SOMEONE COULD ALSO LINK ME TO A GOOD HAND-HELD WEIGHTS ROUTINE THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!!
