Hip Labral Tear

Seems I have a labral tear in my left hip. Done PT and medications with no help. Been in pain for three years and it's gotten progressively worse. Looks like surgery time. Anyone had this surgery? Please tell me what it was like for you, what can I expect. How long was recovery for you? How long until you could do some form of exercise and what could you do.

Thanks.

I had a left hip labral tear and underwent a hip arthroscopy two weeks ago. Prior to surgery, I couldn't sleep on my side and stopped running a couple months ago, because it was too painful. I had an MRI Arthrogram (MRI w/contrast) which provided the answers I needed. Prior to the MRI, I had an x-ray which showed bone spurs on both hips, but no tear. I tried PT for one month and that won't help a tear; however it may temporarily relieve symptoms.

I'm currently in PT 2x per week, back to work part-time and moving around pretty well. I have to remind myself to take it easy since it will take time to heal internally.

If you choose to have a hip arthroscopy, find a surgeon who specializes in this surgery, it is a very specialized operation. There are lots of nightmare stories out there. My surgeon has done 3100+ hip arthroscopy surgeries. There are some good websites that talk about how many a surgeon should do in a year to be considered "skilled".

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!
